Youth
Hunting
The Wildlife Ranch takes pride in having kids hunt. Kids are the
future of hunting. Hunting allows kids to enjoy the outdoors. It
teaches them to respect and enjoy nature. Hunting teaches about
wildlife and their habitat. Kids learn firearm safety and good
hunting practices.
Hunter Education is an important factor and The Wildlife Ranch
supports all aspect of proper hunting ethics. The Wildlife Ranch
has Youth Hunts year round, as well as the Special Youth Seasons
regulated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife, such as the
(Youth-Only Spring Season for Turkey), and the (White-tailed
Deer youth-only hunts).
There is nothing more rewarding than taking a kid on his
or her first hunt. This takes time, patients, and a good hunting
environment. The type of game is not as important as the methods
and means to having a good hunt that will be remembered for a
lifetime. The Wildlife Ranch is proud to have repeat hunters in
their twenties and thirties that have been hunting on The
Wildlife Ranch since they were little kids.
It is an adventure to be sitting in a blind with a young
hunter on his or her first hunt waiting for that Whitetail Buck
to step out in an opening. The movement within the blind is
intense, especially if the parent is there, everything becomes
multiplied by ten. The adrenalin is at its max. The deer are on
alert; there is no way to keep still or quite with-in the blind.
Just when you think there is no way this kid will ever become a
hunter. A nice buck steps out and freezes for just a brief
moment and a little encouragement an advice the shot is fired
and the buck drops in his tracks. The parent is more amazed than
the child, thinking they would go home empty handed, and the
child would never want to hunt again. The excitement with-in the
blind is at is max, pats on the back and handshakes are in
order. This is a major step to adulthood. Exit the blind and
approach the awesome first Buck lying on the ground. Counting
the points and just raising the head and horns as if to show the
whole world. It is time for pictures, although this brief moment
in time will never be forgotten, pictures or not. Get out the
license and filling out the tag, almost forgotten about because
of all the excitement. Loading the Trophy in the back of the
Truck, with a special request by the young hunter, (Can I ride
in the back of the truck with my Buck?), (Yes), of course this
is your special day enjoy it all you want. Then back at camp
telling the story of the hunt, and making that phone call home
to give the great news. When you look at it this way, life dose
not get any better. This is what we call hunting at The Wildlife
Ranch.
Rams are the best and most popular for that first time
hunter. Walking through the woods teaching firearm safety and
different aspects of nature, climbing rocks, and looking for
signs and movement. A big Axis Buck jumps up out of the brush
and runs off, the excitement is over bearing. Dad thinking about
taking the gun away, and going after the buck himself. Then
realizing this is his child's first hunt. Back to business at
hand, just over the next hill, a group of Rams is spotted.
Looking through the binoculars deciding which one to take. There
is a Texas Dall, Corsican, Four Horn, and some other type of Ram
the father and child ask the guide at the same time what is
that. It is a Merino Ram the Guide says, before he can finish
the child is ecstatic talking about the size of the Rams horns.
It is decided that is the one, it will make a great European
Mount above the bed. The guide suggests that they back up and go
around to get a better position. This is probably the most
stressful time for dad, the pressure is on the Ram grazing in
the distance. There are questions and some reluctance about this
all working out. The guide give some last minute advice, then a
little more sneaking up to get a better position. The spot is
chosen a rest is picked out, it is a good position, although
noting like before at the shooting range. The adrenalin is
flowing at full force. The kid takes aim, there is a little
trouble getting the scope focused. Then everything is a go, just
before the shot the Rams steps behind a tree, by this time
everyone is on edge. Then as if it was meant to be the Rams
steps out into the clear and it is time for the shot, careful
aim is taken the guide gives the go a head and the gun fires.
The Ram bolts off, the dad is about to panic, just then the
guide says, great shot. They all walk up to where the Ram was
standing and there is a blood trail and about 50 yards there
lays the young hunters first Trophy. The kid is excited and runs
to look at his Trophy Ram. The dad can not Thank the guide
enough, he knows they will be back. After, a few pictures, the
Ram is loaded in the truck and taken to the cooler. The guide
asks the young hunter to assist in the cleaning of the Ram and
teaches him how to cape his Trophy for a shoulder mount.
Everyone is happy and plans are made for the next hunting trip.
This is how Hunting is going forward at The Wildlife Ranch.
